James Hart. 7IDANsuu James Hart
(Haida Master Carver - Hereditary Chief - Order of Canada - Order of British Columbia)

7IDANsuu James Hart (born 1952, Old Massett, Haida Gwaii) is one of the most influential Haida artists of the modern era - a master carver, sculptor, jeweller, and hereditary chief of the Eagle Clan. His work bridges ancestral Haida formline traditions with monumental contemporary sculpture, spanning wood, bronze, silver, and gold. Hart is internationally recognized for his large-scale carvings, totem poles, and bronze works that appear in major museums and public institutions across Canada.

Birth & Background
Born: 1952, Masset (Old Massett), Haida Gwaii, British Columbia

Clan: Eagle Clan

Hereditary Name: 7IDANsuu, passed down from his ancestor Charles Edenshaw (1839-1920), one of the greatest Haida artists of the 19th century

Family Lineage: Grandson of Charles Edenshaw through his mother, Joan Hart

Hart's father was European, which - according to Hart - allowed him to avoid the residential school system; instead, he grew up with his grandparents and spent his youth fishing before turning fully to art.

Artistic Training & Early Career
Hart discovered his passion for Haida art in high school and began carving seriously in 1979.
Key early milestones:

1978: Apprenticed with Robert Davidson, assisting in constructing a set of totem poles

1980-1984: Assistant to Bill Reid in Vancouver

Completed finishing details on The Raven and the First Man (UBC Museum of Anthropology)

Assisted on Spirit of Haida Gwaii / The Jade Canoe

These formative years placed Hart directly within the lineage of the most important Haida artists of the 20th century.

Major Works & Public Installations
Hart's monumental carvings and sculptures appear across Canada:

Reconciliation Pole (UBC, 2017)
A massive red-cedar pole honouring the history of residential schools - one of Hart's most important works.

Frog Constellation (Simon Fraser University, 1995; installed 2012)
Hart describes this sculpture as his "doctoral thesis."

The Dance Screen (The Scream Too) (Audain Art Museum, Whistler)
A monumental carved screen installed permanently in 2018.

The Three Watchmen (National Gallery of Canada; Plains of Abraham, Quebec)
One of the most recognized bronze sculptures in contemporary Northwest Coast art.

Respect to Bill Reid Pole (UBC Museum of Anthropology)
A tribute pole honouring his mentor Bill Reid.

Haida House Construction (Canadian Museum of Civilization, 1988)
Hart supervised the construction of the Haida house.

Mediums & Style
Hart works in:

Red cedar (totem poles, monumental carvings)

Bronze (first Northwest Coast artist to adopt bronze in 1982)

Silver & gold (jewellery)

Painted and printed graphic designs

His work blends traditional Haida formline with contemporary sculptural approaches, maintaining strict cultural accuracy while innovating in scale and material.
