Norval Morrisseau (Canadian, 1932-2007). Artist Overview
Norval Morrisseau (1932-2007), also known as Copper Thunderbird, is one of the most influential artists in Canadian history and the founding figure of the Woodland School of Art. A self-taught Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) painter, Morrisseau revolutionized contemporary Indigenous art with a visual language that fused traditional Anishinaabe cosmology, shamanic teachings, and bold modernist expression.
His work is instantly recognizable: vivid colours, thick black contour lines, interconnecting forms, and spiritual symbology that communicates relationships between humans, animals, and the metaphysical world. Morrisseau's paintings broke cultural, artistic, and institutional barriers, establishing Indigenous art as a central pillar of Canadian fine art.
