Pair of authentic RCMP defensive tools from the mid-20th century, consisting of a pre-1965 RCMP riding crop-officially designated the "Baton, dismounted"-and a traditional wooden police truncheon. Both items represent historically significant forms of less-lethal equipment used by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police before the adoption of modern expandable batons.

RCMP Riding Crop (Baton, dismounted)
The RCMP riding crop was a short, leather-covered baton concealing a steel rod, carried by members as an authorized ceremonial and duty weapon until its discontinuation in 1965. Despite its outward resemblance to an equestrian crop, it functioned as a weighted truncheon, featuring a woven leather handle and reinforced striking tip.

The crop was prescribed for all orders of dress when sidearms were not carried and was used both in mounted displays such as the Musical Ride and in everyday policing. Its use was documented during major public-order events, including the 1935 Battle of Ballantyne Pier in Vancouver. Internal RCMP correspondence shows attempts to retire the crop as early as 1943 due to storage issues and interference with bicycle patrols, but it remained in service until Commissioner McClellan formally eliminated it in 1965-alongside bamboo canes used by commissioned officers.

Original RCMP riding crops are now highly collectible, especially examples with engraved regimental numbers on the wrist strap interior.

RCMP Wooden Truncheon
The accompanying wooden truncheon is a classic mid-century police nightstick, turned from dense hardwood and shaped with a tapered barrel and grooved handle. The drilled pommel hole was designed for a leather wrist lanyard. These truncheons were carried by RCMP members for general policing, crowd control, and concealed-carry use in specialized trouser pockets. Variants of this style remained in service until the RCMP transitioned to modern expandable batons in the late 20th century.
